As you get closer, you feel the energy shift from the tranquil pine-lined roads of Magoebaskloof to a buzz, an undercurrent of excitement… the winding track takes you around the bend to the glass-fronted Craft Brewery and a burst of colour and movement. There’s the funky Zwakala logo on gorgeous young people at the beer and gin bar and Luca Tooley, head brewmaster, talking animatedly about his champion Weekend Special with its distinctive lemongrass flavour which won National Beer of the Year 2021.
‘South Africans are passionate about their country, their braais, and their beer! Craft beer reconnects the consumer to beer that is slow-brewed, locally-owned and full of flavour. Craft Breweries tell their story in a fun way and I think people appreciate those small details when tasting the beer,’ enthuses Luca. You are at the northern-most Craft Brewery, in the scenic Magoebaskloof Mountains. Here, the clear, pure mountain waters are turned into the award-winning Naked Ale, Limpopo Lager, Mountain Weiss and Moringa Ale this micro-brewery is famous for. Each batch of beer is handcrafted with expertise and passion by Luca and Rob Tooley and the brewery is a favourite place to hang out, slow down and enjoy the beautiful scenery, welcoming hospitality, festive atmosphere.
Zwakala is celebrating its sixth Brew-versary this year with the whole festive crew at the Brewery on 2 July 2022. Zwakala is a celebration of fresh mountain air, the flavours of Limpopo and good times spent together. Kids and dogs can play on the lawns while you enjoy your gourmet burger or shortrib, washed down with a cool brew in hand. Think live music, gin on tap, beer tastings and tours, but best of all, the great vibe that Zwakala Brewery is known for. Come closer and enjoy the mountain magic at Zwakala.
