ZWAKALA - COME CLOSER

ZWAKALA RIVER RETREAT

Whether you are enjoying a craft beer at Zwakala Brewery, celebrating at Mina’s Farm Venue or staying at Zwakala River Retreat, you are always welcomed with open arms to this unique and magical space by the Tooley family.  Denise says, ‘for many years we have shared our little piece of paradise with a host of extended family and friends. We have always gathered together at every (and any) opportunity to celebrate the best things in life.’

But the magic runs much deeper. It is in the sparkling river which meanders through the farm beckoning visitors to come and play … It is the fragrance of spring on the breeze … it’s the way the light dances through the trees and how the stillness envelops you. All of this creates an alchemy which is hard to describe but changes who you are. True to its name, Zwakala is a place to come together and just be yourself without too many rules and restrictions, a relaxed family farm where you can let your hair down.  Here, you can throw your head back and laugh, go swimming in the river and dry off on sun-warmed rocks and, in the evening, have deep conversations under a starlit sky.

Stay in the Scandinavian-style log cabins, one of Zwakala’s unique, off-the-grid campsites along the banks of the Broederstroom river or in one of the four cottages, each with its own character.  Some of the venues are tucked away near the river and others are conveniently closer to Mina's Farm Venue and Zwakala Brewery.  Denise explains that, ‘The Barn, Cob and Honey Houses are perfect if you want electricity but we have chosen to keep Legodi Cottage off the grid because we believe that the simplicity of candlelight and lamps, steaming hot water from a donkey boiler and a 'lekka' fire make for romance, talking, dreaming and togetherness.’

Although Zwakala is centrally located to explore the magical nature spaces of Magoebaskloof, you can also stay put and not see another person for your entire stay. Zwakala is famous for its relaxed riverside days and sun-kissed mornings when the world feels full of possibility. Come closer and meet people who are passionate about this space, our world and each other.

BREW DAYS AT ZWAKALA BREWERY

‘Zwakala, meaning come closer and the Africanism it embodies encapsulates the motto of the Tooley family to welcome everyone with a warm smile, a genuine interest in who you are and, of course, a cold Zwakala beer, says owner Rob Tooley.   Zwakala Brewery also offers tasting experiences of their award-winning beers, giving visitors the chance to savour the flavours that make this craft brewery a standout destination.

The tasting board gives you four very different beers to try, so start by comparing them by colour and clarity which hint at their style and flavour. Inhale the aroma, identifying any distinct notes like citrus, hops, or malt and when you take your first sip, let the beer roll over your palate to experience the balance of flavours, bitterness and mouthfeel before savouring the aftertaste.  From a rich, golden ale to the unique Cape Parrot beer, each reflects the passion and craftsmanship behind every brew.

Zwakala’s seasonal beer in 2024 was brewed to celebrate the Cape Parrot, South Africa’s bird of the year which is to be found locally in the Woodbush Forest and surrounds. Rob says, ‘even if they are more expensive, once a person has indulged in good craft beers, they are unlikely to go back to the mass-produced, commercial beer, which are generally brewed very quickly and have a bland taste.’

Since Zwakala Brewery opened its doors in June 2016, this northern-most Craft Brewery has been an incredible success story.  Rob says, ‘For us it’s all about great beer, good food, chilled music and a special welcoming vibe that has been created throughout the years.

On Brew Days, visitors can taste something new other than the Limpopo Lager which is bottled for the public.  SAffers love lagers so that’s what we will be making using a process called dry hopping, which gives the beer either a stronger smell or taste.  Come for a visit and taste all our delicious beers.  Cheers!’  Connect on 083 627 2551 | www.zwakalabrewery.com

The secret to a perfect proposal is to make it unique, surprising and memorable so what better place than the magical Magoebaskloof? This area has everything from romantic settings to spectacular landscapes so with planning and imagination, you can create a moment that you and your partner will remember forever.  Zwakala River Retreat is a favourite spot to pop the question at the riverside, but it is also one of the most glorious wedding venues.  After a ceremony in the heart of the forest under pine trees softened by dappled sunlight, guests make their way down to the lovely reception area at Mina’s Farm Venue to take their seats under towering trees looking out into a mystical valley of green.  As the sun sets behind the mountains, the golden hour is carried into fairy lights, bonfires and twinkling stars.
