THE SUNSET QUEEN CRUISE ON EBENEZER DAM

You know that beautiful screensaver you have? The one where the sun is setting in a blaze of colour reflecting the sky in the rippling water. Stop daydreaming ... this is real-time summertime in Magoebaskloof! Ebenezer Dam is tucked into the heart of Magoebaskloof, surrounded by magical mountains. Built on the Great Letaba River, it’s a popular playground for water sport enthusiasts, with facilities suited to a variety of watercraft including motorboats, sailboats and even rowing boats. You can enjoy the Ebenezer Dam up close and personal on day cruises for groups of 10 - 27 people and it is ideal for family and fishing outings on the water as well as for special occasions or corporate functions.

Tobie and Alta Smit bought the Sunset Queen boat in 2008 after Alta booked it for an outing and, seeing it was up for sale, they bought it, did some key renovations and have never looked back. Alta says, ‘it is a perfect way to get away from everyday life and truly relax. Visitors can bring their own snacks and drinks but we also have staff onboard who will do the braaing while you enjoy the beautiful, tranquil surroundings. Everything you need is supplied for you including the gas braai, cutlery and crockery, tables and chairs and toilet facilities. There is even a sound system if you want a party vibe.’

The Ebenezer Dam has a surface of 386 hectares, roughly a third of the size of the Hartebeespoort Dam and supplies water to Tzaneen and the surrounding areas. Its levels have fluctuated widely over the years depending on weather varying from drought to abundant rains but once a year, the famous Ebenezer Mile is held in March attracting swimmers from all over the world while boat fishing can reward anglers with bass, rainbow trout, carp, kurper and barbel.

Sunset Queen Day Cruises have two departures per day for the 3 hour cruise: 10am - 1pm and 2 - 5pm. There is a minimum of 10 adults and a maximum of 27 people. Rates: R300 per adult, kids aged 6-11: R250; kids of 3-5 years: R220, children under 3: free.
