MEET HAENERTSBURG ARTIST, RENIER OOSTHUIZEN

Renier Oosthuizen is a talented and popular artist living in the heart of Haenertsburg.  He describes his art as mostly ‘impressionistic with loose brushstrokes’ and works mainly in Acrylics as ‘it dries quickly and is versatile enough to be used very thin and watery as well as in a thick paste.’  Renier finds lots of inspiration in his surroundings and particularly loves painting flowers and landscapes.  He says, ‘I once painted a misty, after-the-rain landscape scene from just outside Haenertsburg, which is my all time favourite because it captures the magical mood we find in these beautiful mountains.’

In fact, it was the magical mist and peaceful lifestyle which brought Renier back to Haenertsburg after being away for four years.  He says, ‘I’m back on The Mountain where I belong.  I love those grey days and when the mist comes floating over the mountains and trees it helps my creative juices, creating a mix of beautiful colours.’  Renier explored his artistic talent at the Art Ballet and Music school in Pretoria in the late 70's and did Fashion Designing for many years after school.  But the turning point for him came about eight years ago when he took part in an Art Workshop with Shirley Howells in Clarens and decided that he was passionate enough to become a full-time Artist. He greatly admires the work of American painter, Robert Burridge whose quick, loose and free style inspires him to work bigger and more boldly.

Renier also teaches monthly Art Workshops: participants each create three paintings over 2 days, beginners are welcome.  (14 & 15 March 2024 R1500).  You will find Renier’s work for sale at various venues in and around Haenertsburg as well as a permanent art gallery at the newly-opened Lavender House on Rissik which not only exhibits and sells his lovely paintings throughout the centre of the space but also has unique sets of mugs and coasters with his floral series for sale.

Lavender House’s newly renovated retail space in the centre of the Village boasts several rooms with unique local crafts like ceramics, gifts, clothing, decor and collectables in each.  You will find handcrafted wooden bellows and biltong cutters, cheese boards and coasters for sale in one room and colourful ceramic bowls and platters in another.  There is a section for local, homemade almond shortbread, caramelized macadamia nuts, Krabbefontein coffee as well as avocado oils, balms and soaps, while the extensive range of decor items make great gifts.
