Magoebaskloof, with its dense forests, breathtaking views and meandering trails, is a paradise for mountain biking enthusiasts looking to connect with nature while challenging themselves on some of South Africa’s most scenic trails. The area offers a diverse range of routes that cater to all skill levels, from leisurely rides through lush landscapes to adrenaline-pumping downhill tracks. Two marked Mountain Bike routes have starting points from Haenertsburg Village and lodges nearby. The Blue (10km) and Yellow route (25km) have some challenging single track segments but can also be ridden by less-experienced riders if they take it easy and can be combined to give a longer ride. ‘I absolutely love cycling in our fantastic surroundings - breathing in the clean Magoebaskloof mountain air and riding with friends.’ says Duncan Barry, a local Mountain Bike enthusiast.
Local volunteers do their best on a limited budget to keep these trails clear, signposted and in good order. There is a small charge of R50 to access the routes and every cent of those proceeds goes back into maintaining the trails. A once semi-professional athlete, nature enthusiast, photographer and free spirit, she weaves tales through her lens and being deep in nature is her preferred space. Sandi invites not only seasoned hikers but also novices to embark on guided adventures, fostering meaningful connections with the natural world. With a keen eye for storytelling, she crafts unforgettable experiences that go beyond mere walking. Her passion lies in empowering others to safely explore the great outdoors, surrounded by like-minded individuals who share her zest for nature.
Sammy Mokhele, the General Manager of Meropa Casino has brought his senior management team for a guided walk and is one of Sandi’s regulars because, as he says, ‘she accommodates all hikers with various hiking experiences and everyone feels welcomed as part of the hiking family. Sandi is knowledgeable about the natural habitat, plants and animals of the area, making the hike both enjoyable and educational. Before we start, she gathers hikers in one area where she takes everyone through the do’s and don'ts, what to expect, safety protocols and most importantly, how to enjoy yourself during the hike. She always says this is not a race, please enjoy the walk!’
